Idioms, do we use them? The question is yes. Many of us use them daily, but don't even think of them. Do be careful as some of them may be a bit out of date.
Today, I will show a few samples that commonly used.
1.Let's call it a day -----> means to stop for the day
example: Wow! We really got a lot done today. Let's call it a day.
2.To cut corners -----> means to do things easily and/or cheaply, perhaps roughly.
example: The company who produced these speakers cut some corners. The lack of quality is evident.
3.The best of the both worlds -----> means to have two good things where most people only can have one of them.
example: Ayumu Hirano has the best of both worlds. He can skateboard and snowboard and therefore he can participate in both Winter and Summer Olympics.
4.To cost an arm and a leg -----> means that it is very expensive
example: That car looks amazing. It must have cost an arm and a leg.
5.A piece of cake -----> means it's easy
example: The homework was a piece of cake.
6.Give someone the cold shoulder -----> to ignore someone
example: I gave her the cold shoulder all week because she ate my lunch.
7.See eye to eye -----> to agree with someone
example: Billy and Joe always are arguing, but they see eye to eye when it comes to cars.
8.Burn your bridges -----> make it so that you can't return or back
example: She burnt her bridges with her friends when she publicly criticized her friends.
9.Speak of the devil -----> the thing/person you spoke about, suddenly appears
example:
John: We should go get something to eat.
Billy: Yea, that's a good idea. We should give Tommy a call too.
いきなりTommyが現れる
Tommy: Hey, guys!
John & Billy: Speak of the devil.
10.Kill time -----> means to do something while you are waiting
example: We have a few hours until the movie starts. Let's kill some time at the game center.
